If you live in Accra, you should be questioning why your lights keep going off, why "energy crisis looms" and why your taps don't flow.br /br /Well, yesterday in the Volta Region, I saw this young woman fetching all the water from the Volta Lake. Yes. She's the guilty one :) I doubt she pays water bills but she fetches all the water. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty as hell.br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4426712890/" title="Volta-Lake-1 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4013/4426712890_d2bbe990d8_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Volta-Lake-1" //abr /br /Don't you wish the problem was as simple as that?br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4425950693/" title="Volta-Lake-2 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4061/4425950693_054a6ac973_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Volta-Lake-2" //abr /br /On a more serious note, I think Ghana can no longer depend on Mother Nature to run. We need to be proactive. We are too intelligent and too blessed as a people to be depending on rain to grow our crops, rain to get electricity, rain to get water to drink. And in the midst of all these perils, we keep chopping down our trees. What is wrong with us? What happened to those trees infront of the Kama Conference Centre in Nyaniba? Whose bright idea was it to start chopping them down? br /I still haven't forgiven whoever chopped down that big tree at the Togo Embassy Junction in Cantonments. It's hard to forgive them when they put up such horrible art in that place. I still wonder whose brilliant idea that was. br /br /And please can someone tell them to remove those "Millenium City" signage around the Independence Arch, I bet anybody who sees those will think we have no good artists, architects and designers in this country. Sometimes, it does get embarrassing. br /br /We are already 24 million and rising. Now we need, less talk and more action. Even if the action is going to be "slow but sure" please let it happen. We can't go on like this.div class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-870179444916391546?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

The past couple of days has been great for me when it comes to family. I got to hang out with my younger sister in deeper, loving ways than we’ve ever had in a long, long time and I also got to attend a cousin’s wedding in Tema, where I partly grew up.br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4412767956/" title="_MG_3636 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4051/4412767956_cd8f4f37a5_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_3636" //abr /Meeting all those old faces was both a great and sad moment for me. Isn’t it amazing how you meet people from over a decade ago and nothing about them has changed; although the world is moving so fast? br /br /If there is one word that sums up this wedding, it is “JARRING”. First, the groom was in a loud yellow shirt and a white suit. I have photographed many weddings but this is my first time encountering a “loud” groom. Secondly, the speakers were so loud, my daughter just freaked out and my wife ended up with aching ears after the service. I have to confess that in spite of all the noise, I really had fun. I was hugging friends and cousins and aunties and uncles from yesteryears.a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4412015703/" title="_MG_3677 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2777/4412015703_5f76dc3b45_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_3677" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4412779600/" title="_MG_4007 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2789/4412779600_15815e4f75_o.jpg" width="533" height="800" alt="_MG_4007" //abr /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4412002779/" title="_MG_3701 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4070/4412002779_2dd703baf4_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_3701" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4412004289/" title="_MG_3702 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4041/4412004289_bc129de21f_o.jpg" width="800" height="532" alt="_MG_3702" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4412774282/" title="_MG_3793 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4040/4412774282_18705bd250_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_3793" //abr /As is typical with such weddings, everybody had to show off their camera phone or digicam. I wonder how the official photographer managed to survive. He was freaked out by my gripped 5d Mark II and 85LII. I kinda felt bad seeing him stand there in shock instead of working. I don’t know why too many people believe it is the camera that makes the photos. It’s as lame as saying writing with an expensive pen makes you a great writer. I can’t deny some gears are cooler and more appropriate to use than others depending on the assignment but to be honest, it is never the gear. Please take this last advice if photography is just your hobby.br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4412009711/" title="_MG_3745 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4061/4412009711_77d18163b6_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_3745" //abr /If you are a professional photographer, my advice will be different. Invest in the best gear you can afford and most importantly, master them. Of course, it is still true that if your imagination is blind, no camera on earth can make you a great photographer. You need to be creative and driven and passionate about photography but you also need to master your tools. You must master your gear so well that you actually operate them from your subconscious. Remember the only time you can justify acquiring new gear, is when you have fully mastered how to use your current one and have honestly found them limiting.a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4412008241/" title="_MG_3944 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2800/4412008241_a831a3ee99_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_3944" //abr /br /For a professional photographer, I think the least gesture of respect you can make for your clients, is to cover their assignment with the right cameras, lenses, lights and most importantly, idea. Always come back with great pictures. Never come back with excuses, no matter how great they sound. One camera body is not enough if you are a pro. Have a back up body. Have back up lenses etc. Don’t buy crap gear. Don’t make crap photos because both a bad and a good photograph will outlive you, go places you will never dream of and wherever they go, they take you along. If you underestimate the power of photography, you have no business calling yourself a photographer.br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4412013637/" title="_MG_3988 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2760/4412013637_22bf472ee4_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_3988" //abr /Finally, be tough on yourself but gentle with others. It is a classic mark of insecurity and low self esteem, if you are incapable of appreciating the potential in others and your own shortcomings. Photography is a journey not a destination. If you don’t know that, you’re done. I'm done.a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4412017841/" title="_MG_4010 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4008/4412017841_de706be6e9_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_4010" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-1294460664482706657?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

It seems the month of struggle in Angola is paying off nicely... "As there is quite a lot happening with and around the Year of the Planet exhibition I thought it was important to give you an update. As you know it opened in Lisbon last November. It is currently touring Angola (5 cities) where BESA is cooperating with the Ministry of Education to develop lesson materials and attract schoolchildren to the exhibition. Moreover BESA has arranged for the exhibition to be shown at the UN headquarters in New York in May. There are also plans to show the exhibition and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in September. For these exhibitions BESA has asked World Press Photo to make a book which should be ready by early May. We will make sure that each of you receives 10 copies for your personal use. Rebecca Simons (cc) might be contacting you about this if we need some additional information".br /br /Thanks Maarten for the good news. I also want to thank all of you who read my blog. When the wrong choices we make in life come back at us, we look for who to blame. In most parts of Northern Ghana, the aged, the poor and the "different" is constantly preyed upon by society; and either get banished or killed. br /br /This is a photograph I made in Gambaga in the Upper East Region of Ghana, on assignment for AWDF. The chief of this village created a refuge for persecuted old people accused of witchcraft. br /br /The woman in the photograph had just gone to fetch water from a well to go and do her household chores. She is a native of the village and not one of the accused.br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4314573505/" title="Water Bearer by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2737/4314573505_913eb8e0b2_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Water Bearer" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-8175914378655377705?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

This morning, I reconnected my Vodafone line thanks to Ramatu. Now the story behind this phone number is funny. br /br /Some years ago, I used to work at Lowe Lintas and when we won Ghana Telecom as a client, we naturally started using Onetouch phone lines. (Onetouch is now Vodafone). So we all got numbers but strangely enough my ended with a 69. I thought for a moment and was wondering why my number alone will end with a 69? Is it a coded message? br /br /Well... along the line, I noticed that actually I had the most memorable among the whole lot. All I had to tell people is remember that my number is 0208... everyday, everyday, do the 69 (0208 24 24 69) and they never forgot.br /br /So yes, both my Zain and Vodafone numbers are the same. Zain is 0262 everyday everyday do the 69. I have finally decided to bury my MTN line. Ten years of crap must end someday. br /br /Now on the photograph, this is on the Cape Coast Accra road, after Yamoransa when you start approaching Biriwa. a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4271394060/" title="Yamoransa Curve by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2696/4271394060_0eb09841e7_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Yamoransa Curve" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-3716365114066408690?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

I went to the Osu office of MTN again today. I was pleasantly surprised by the empathy and support I received from Edem Selormey. WoW what a phenomenal woman! She totally understood my complaints, quickly admitted it is a problem they must get into and immediately promised to reconnect my line and treat it as an "exemption" till the investigation is done.br /br /That was 7 hours ago. My line is still disconnected but at least, she made me feel like I'm not a fool for being their customer for ten years.br /br /Honestly, if there was a way I could move my MTN number to another network, I will do it with such speed and glee but I hear some people in the telecommunication industry in Ghana are making sure it never happens. br /br /If MTN ever decides it has too much dead weight and would like to lay a few people off, they should just give me a call. I can give them a few names. Of course, if they want to promote the few smart and hardworking ones, I can also give them names.br /br /Fortunately, I have been able to constantly control my temper anytime I have been in their office. A friend once wrote on facebook that "never argue with a fool because first, they will reduce you to their level and then beat you with experience". Considering the quality of service I'm receiving, I can postulate that some of those guys at MTN have been blasted by customers so often that now they have a lot of experience in dealing with naggers. I don't want them to reduce me to their level and beat me with experience so I will just sit and wait. How for do?div class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-4955771990675893230?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

Yesterday was my 5th Wedding Anniversary. My wife and I have been sooo busy we both forgot. Fortunately, my sweet sister reminded us. We were happy and grateful but too tired to celebrate. This is not the life I wish for. I want to have a life. I know my lack of a life has nothing to do with my fate and everything to do with my choices.br /br /As we gear up for the new year, that might be one of my resolutions: to have a quality life. To spend my strength on those and that which matters. It sounds like a small resolution but I know it is a tough one. br /br /So as a way of celebrating my wedding anniversary and also wishing you a wonderful christmas and a great new year, I share this image with you. I do hope that in the coming year, you will savour on the sweet things in life. Let's promise ourselves, we are not going to "cast our pearls before swines".br /br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4195445149/" title="sweetness in the mouth by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2624/4195445149_5a021ccb73_o.jpg" width="638" height="800" alt="sweetness in the mouth" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-4059581812578246747?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

I am having terrible issues with MTN. How can you treat your customers like rubbish?br /How can you bill your post paid clients for calls they didn’t make on phone numbers that don’t exist anymore?br /br /I have been going up and down their Osu office and now I am tired. Nobody there seems responsible and concerned enough. My line is suspended and I don’t even owe them. br /br /So please if you are trying to reach me and you can’t, call my Zain: 0262 24 24 69.br /br /The only reason why I’ve been hesitant in jumping ship completely is the fact that I’ve been using my MTN number for close to 10 years. You never know which friend is trying to reconnect after many years.div class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-421279180856193019?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

I remember seeing a full grown woman crying hysterically and begging the nurse "please don't inject my buttocks. Inject my thigh! O please don't inject me. O maaaamieeeee!" It was hilarious. It's ok to let me know if you fear injections. I won't tease you with it :)br /br /But more importantly, no matter how you think this year has been for you, please make sure you enjoy this Christmas by every means possible. No, this post is not about Tiger Woods. Yes, he’s black, he’s 33 and already facing midlife crisis but that is not what I want to talk about. Today, I have decided to turn my camera on myself ☺ It’s scary but I need to do this.br /br /Just a few years ago, I was 18 and had the flattest (actually inverted) stomach in my yard. My nickname was “The Wasp” .br /br /Today, I notice my stomach is gradually filling out. And with that comes my biggest fear. You know, I am vertically challenged. At least, I consider myself so and there is nothing as unfortunate, in my opinion, as a short man with a pot belly. You look like a ball, I feel.br /br /I don’t want to look like a ball. Fortunately, I don’t sit in an air-conditioned office all day like some folk. My job makes me walk and run and climb stuff a lot. Some time ago, that was enough exercise but now, it is getting obvious I need to be working harder.br /br /Is there anything you have done that really worked for you? I have already decided to cut out sugar; and once I master that, I will move on to the carbohydrates. br /br /Ghanaspan style="font-style:italic;" koraaa,/span why are our dishes so one way? br /br /Any way, if you have an practical advise on how to save this 33 year old man from becoming a ball, don’t keep it to yourself.br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4185498600/" title="the shooter by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2646/4185498600_d73934c544_o.jpg" width="571" height="800" alt="the shooter" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-2692966859273254006?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

There are many things I foresaw in my life. Fatherhood wasn’t one of them.br /Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t become a father by accident. br /br /First I fell in love with a girl, we dated for half a decade, decided to get married and then we thought it will be nice to have children. br /br /I know that if I was to depend on my own experiences growing up, I will become a terrible father but fortunately, I don’t have to. I am surrounded by positive examples. Great books abound on fatherhood and with a little effort, we guys can all have a great go at it.br /br /I know a couple in Accra who are about to run a course on parenting. Both mothers and fathers should be interested. Are you interested?br /br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4165780720/" title="pk-on-toy by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2739/4165780720_23fcd4d8d2_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="pk-on-toy" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4165021775/" title="pk-feet by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4002/4165021775_dd45eab0e9_o.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="pk-feet" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4165021171/" title="pk-and-toy by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2622/4165021171_a7cbffe288_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="pk-and-toy" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-8902126814817773444?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

Last night was such a blast. I started the day tired. I’d been shooting an ad campaign the whole of Friday. Big production. Too many props, too many people, children in the mix… and that just drained all my energy. br /br /Last night however, ended like a day is supposed to. I went to the a href="http://www.stratcomm-africa.com"Stratcomm Africa/a Praise Jam 2009 at the Alisa Hotel, Ridge. Wow! What an atmosphere that was. br /br /I’ve been a Christian for over 2 decades and over the years, I have seen how Christianity in Ghana and other parts of world, has become synonymous with incompetence, poverty, low I.Q, hypocrisy and every bad thing on Gods’ good earth. I know that perception is not a reflection of the full picture at all. br /br /There is a proverb that says “when a dog bites a man, it is not news but when a man bites a dog, that is news”. The truth of this proverb is that, it doesn’t matter how many times a dog bites a man, we choose to only talk about and remember the times when a man bites a dog. It is newsier. I hereby assert that the negative perception of Christianity has been created by our natural attraction to bad news. The good things that christians do is seen as normal and expected and so often goes unappreciated and undocumented.br /br /Yesterday I watched some of Ghana’s most competent citizenry (Stratcomm is Ghana’s best communications organization hands down. I have worked in this industry for approximately a decade and I have dealt with the best and worst) raise their hands in praise, take the microphone and burst into singing and dancing. br /br /So for all those who think we Christians are a bunch of ignoramuses, think again. We don’t always wear it on our shoulders when we deal with you but more often than not, the reason why you are impressed with what we do and how we do it, is because of the Jesus in us.br / br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4161742423/" title="_MG_9456 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2634/4161742423_372210fae8_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9456" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4161741297/" title="_MG_9438 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2749/4161741297_04f1b6bbb3_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9438" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4161740199/" title="_MG_9417 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2749/4161740199_4136fbd677_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9417" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4162498386/" title="_MG_9412 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2526/4162498386_27c3019055_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9412" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4161737693/" title="_MG_9377 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2557/4161737693_43657b8ec4_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9377" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4161736519/" title="_MG_9366 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2517/4161736519_29be603478_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9366" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4162494114/" title="_MG_9342 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2765/4162494114_68647fee86_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9342" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4162492138/" title="_MG_9328 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2789/4162492138_3d98dfec45_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9328" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4162491130/" title="_MG_9311 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2778/4162491130_c4c4fa57d7_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9311" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4162488118/" title="_MG_9277 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2659/4162488118_a6317bc5a8_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9277" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4162486874/" title="_MG_9274 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2542/4162486874_443356cfc5_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9274" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4162485266/" title="_MG_9269 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2725/4162485266_898b658a54_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9269" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4162488978/" title="_MG_9302 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2604/4162488978_6e338573dd_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_9302" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-5244846421395214458?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

Kwamina Simpson looks through his rearview mirror at the little girl singing in the back seat of his car. It seems anytime he looks into the mirror, the girl grows. Just yesterday, she was a little girl. Today she’s all woman. Time really flies doesn’t it? He always looks into the mirror when he hears her sing. Sometimes he sings along with her. Today, he just wants to watch and day dream of the day Kraba will become a superstar; bigger than Whitney Houston and with better manners to boot. He’s brought her up well and that he’s proud of.br / br /Kwamina can’t wait to get back home. The home DVD he picked up from his friend James’ was carefully concealed in his loose boubou. Kraba is the only one who bursts into his room without knocking but now that he’s dropped her in school, the mouse will really get to play tonight. br /br /James knows how to make those girls moan for more. Kwamina gets in the groove. He starts wanking off to the sound the chubby girl is creating. She is the most skillful and she’s got this special way of moaning: it begins almost like a whimper but quickly crescendos into scats that match James’ thrusts. Kwamina syncs his busy hand to her moanful scats till his whole body spasms as one possessed and he shoots all over his laptop.br /br /He catches his breath. He stretches out his hand to wipe the semen off the glossy screen. Just then, James also reaches out his hand and pulls off the mask on Kraba’s face. Kwamina’s hand touches her face. How can anybody be feminist and not love Jesus? He did more for the cause and status of women than any politician has ever done. If you don't believe me, check these out:br /br /1. He honored his mum by turning water into wine at her request. She made the request at a wedding (in a public place) and even though he didn’t want to do it, just to make her feel good, he did.br /br /2. He healed an oppressed and hunched woman on a Sabbath. He called her “daughter of Abraham” and said the devil had no right to bind her for 18 years. The Pharisees hated Him for this but He cared more about the woman’s health and joy than their egos.br /br /3. He conversed with a “lose woman” from a marginalized race in the most public of all places- a well. The story ends with this woman becoming the toast of her town. He gave her her pride and dignity back.br /br /4. He single handedly defended a woman against a mob of fanatics. We don’t know what he wrote in the sand but we know he said: “whoever has not sinned before should cast the first stone”. And then he told her, “neither do I condemn you”. br /br /5. He spoke against polygamy and said every woman deserves to have her own husband. Girls, because of Jesus, you don’t need to share your man. You can have him all to yourself.br /br /6. Jesus said divorce was permitted by Moses because men were killing their wives in order to get rid of them but the right thing for any man to do, is to love his wife to death. br /br /7. Jesus showed his love for Mary and Martha by going to resurrect their dead brother. He wept when they doubted his intentions and abilities.br /br /8. A woman who had been menstruating for 12 years touched him and he said it was alright. In Jewish tradition, it was a taboo. The woman was shaking with fear when Jesus asked who had touched him. She thought she was going to be stoned to death but Jesus rather congratulated her on her faith.br /br /9. Even on his death cross, he thought about his mum and asked his disciples to take very good care of her for him since he was dying and won’t be there in the physical to provide for her.br /br /10. Finally, when he rose from the dead, he made sure the first person to see Him was a woman. This technically means, the first person to ever preach the gospel was... you guessed right... a woman.br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4127784564/" title="child play by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2667/4127784564_689ed4d71d_o.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="child play" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-5773968484705895287?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

It’s Friday night. I have hard-earned money to spend. I don’t mind footing the whole bill. Yes, we are not going dutch. We are going me. The only problem is… I am all alone. Alone, rich and lonely. My heart is freezing from lack of touch.br /All the friends in my life are busy. We are all too busy making it. The question is, what are we trying to make? What is it that changes us so? We who were once snuggling, hugging, trusting earthlings have a strange way of growing into irritable, self-righteous, lonely losers. Once you take the money out, we have nothing; and that is too tough to admit. Losers.br /br /Today, I want to throw caution out the window and smile at a stranger. Giggle at them. Heck! I want to hug a stranger and tell them something nice I see in them. What is the use in being proper, if it’s gonna kill you properly? I want to notice someone else today. To take my eyes off me and see you. Your beautiful eyes, your just-a-little-crooked nose, your rabbit teeth, your Prince Charles Obama ears. I see you. And if my courage fails me, I will pull out my old address book and holler some old, forgotten friends.br /br /I won’t pretend I don’t have some answers. I dated a girl who deliberately forgot my birthday or fought with me a few days prior so she didn’t have to give me a present. I had a friend I considered a brother sell me a fake watch for the price of an original. I was too trusting to check. I built a wall between us. I have lists of folk who only call when they are in need. Some even make me feel I owe them something. It’s easier to avoid them than deal with them. Good Lord knows how many walls now guard my heart. Yet, what we build to protect us, is what kills us… softly.br /br /So in spite of the strong repellants out there, like the Raid bug, I choose to push my walls over. To every single wall of fear, suspicion, cynicism, aloofness, cold-heartedness and pain I shout: PUSH OVER! PUSH OVER! They might get me but if they don’t, at least, I get to see the world. I get to run again. I get to play again. I get to laugh again. I get to meet other bugs and together, we infest the world with laughter, trust, hope and joy. I want to get sticky.a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4110329242/" title="senegal by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2719/4110329242_aa350603d0_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="senegal" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4110328120/" title="senegal by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2548/4110328120_fb3c56e110_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="senegal" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4109562861/" title="senegal by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2523/4109562861_4d60626e03_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="senegal" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4109499185/" title="Senegal: Dance Break by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2734/4109499185_32cca11da6_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Senegal: Dance Break" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-9163059020479192230?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

Of course, I also dedicate this whole series to all my many "Lindas" and I do hope these photographs sustain you for the short while I'm in the Gambia on assignment.br /br /Just a quick thought on traveling through Africa as a photographer. I was detained at the Angola airport for seven hours because I'm a photographer. I was arrested and shortly released in Abidjan for the same reason. br /br /I hope the Gambia treats me nice; especially considering "tragic stories about some 40 Ghanaians not too long ago."br /br /Cheers.br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4104751511/" title="Making up the bride by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2801/4104751511_0cc38927f2_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Making up the bride" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4105518718/" title="Breakers of the quot;Color Curtainquot; by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2609/4105518718_b5012227e5_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Breakers of the quot;Color Curtainquot;" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4105518362/" title="Monkey games by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2491/4105518362_2d1ed54816_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Monkey games" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4105517956/" title="Sex Education for Children by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2565/4105517956_bb5fd69c11_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Sex Education for Children" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4105517192/" title="Leidseplein Street Performers by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2670/4105517192_0a91220347_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Leidseplein Street Performers" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-4430749669730601649?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

Five metres away from him, another one was selling neck ties. And then this taxi driver who couldn't even get his engine to run, tried to cut into my lane. I looked at him and said in Twi but with a funny Ga accent "Hey, wo pe se wo sei wo kaa no wo hu?" (Hey, do you want to destroy your car?) The mock anger and grin on my face pissed him off so much he said, "Fa wo nkwasea sem no soo ho" (Take your nonsense somewhere else). The sun was stupidly hot but it couldn't stop the laughter. This is why I love Africa. I had to post these colourful pictures. I know I've been quite bloody on this blog but there is more to life than death, blood and fire. There is also laughter and joy, peace and love, warmth and affection, sweet and ticklish, friendship and humour. Have fun enjoying these photographs and do have a great week. a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4044490818/" title="Colorful day by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2708/4044490818_da08a2e645_o.jpg" width="800" height="534" alt="Colorful day" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4044491190/" title="Colorful day by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3510/4044491190_266fe6736e_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="Colorful day" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4044492344/" title="Colorful day by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2521/4044492344_3f1781ff18_o.jpg" width="800" height="534" alt="Colorful day" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4043745695/" title="Colorful day by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2605/4043745695_c7b87178f6_o.jpg" width="800" height="534" alt="Colorful day" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-4266913746815283194?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

I grew up among the Gas, the natives of Accra. I had to fight my way to respect in school but my reputation as a survivor came faster because of the precision with which I could hurl a stone at a moving target. br /br /I remember puncturing a kid’s head with the tip of an old, heavy, pressing iron and watching the blood escape from his skull and shoot into the air like a liberated fountain. “Who’s next?” I shouted but no other kid came forward. I had fought my poor opponent in school a while back but forgot all about it. On that bloody Saturday morning, I had been sent to take the pressing iron to the repairer, who lived in this boy’s neighbourhood. In no time, about twenty boys had surrounded me. That is how we grew up in old Accra. You fight. If I remember correctly, that was the last time I had to fight. The story spread fast, sounding bloodier with each retelling.br /br /The Slaughter Boys is a story of survival. A decade ago, the then government of Ghana demolished the colonial Abattoir in favour of a more modern one in the centre of the capital. What it couldn’t do, was win the fight against the Slaughter Boys. Everyday, several hundreds of sheep and goats are slaughtered in the bare sands of the beach, where the building used to be, and readied for every market in Accra. After each bloody morning, the boys rest a bit and head for the gyms to train as boxers whilst the older ones act as coaches, promoters, and fans.br /br /I grew up at the time when Azumah Nelson was king. He called himself “The Professor of boxing”. I can still remember the day he came to my neighbourhood, which was the very one he grew up in, driving his Nissan Blue Bird with a black and white number plate that read- ZOOM ZOOM. We swarmed him like malnourished doves at the sight of crumbs. Only this time, instead of crumbs, he was throwing Jerry Rawlings’ “gye nyame” ten cedi notes at us. That day, Azumah Nelson became our dream. All we could talk and think about as kids was boxing. We too wanted to be champions. Mine waned but not everybody else’s.br /br /The Attorh Kwashie Gym, where most of the slaughter boys train as boxers currently has fourteen professional boxers and thirty amateurs. They have to share boxing gloves, gums and towels. They have no sponsors and no support but they persist. The motto, “No Pain, No Gain”, is not just an inscription on the walls. It is the only language they speak. They know that one good boxing match can give them far more than they can ever earn at the slaughter house in a lifetime.br /br /"originally written for ZAM Magazine, Africa"br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4030943434/" title="_MG_8725 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2685/4030943434_9e2a53ecac_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="_MG_8725" //aa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4030186189/" title="Untitled-7 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2437/4030186189_70bd40b229_o.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="Untitled-7" //a a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/4030939814/" title="Untitled-1 by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3011/4030939814_588610eaa1_o.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="Untitled-1" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-6499890652166950662?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

I will tell you a Ghanaian joke. This man is driving out of his house in the morning to go to work. His security guard runs over to his car, knocks on the glass panting. Boss rolls down and grinning security man tells him. "Boss, I dreamt that 11-20-45 will be the winning numbers this weekend. Sure banker." Boss was so mad and couldn't help yelling: " Ei! Watchman! Instead of guarding my house. You sleep and dream lotto numbers eh?! You are fired!". Problem is, Boss went ahead to stake the numbers and true to his watchman's dream, he won the lottery. I had a conversation recently with a potential client who wanted to see my portfolio. I showed them a number of photographs and they said "You don't use a lot of light in your photographs. I want to see your work with light". That made me pause a bit.. breathe in and reply politely. They obviously didn't know what they were talking about.br /br /Like most photographers, I have invested heavily in light. At least I have a dozen heads. Big. Small. I use them but I think a lot of the time, photographers make light get in the way. Photography simply means "writing with light" but what most people don't get is you need to always answer the question " What am I going to write about with these lights?". If they stop to answer the question, they will notice most of the time, they are supposed to be writing about something else and not their lighting skills. A good handwriting is a good skill but as most of you know, in an exam you are supposed to answer questions not show off how well you write. br /br /If the only way to say what you want to say is with heavy lighting, please don't cut corners. Use all the lights and modifiers you need... but when you are so concerned about light that you forget what your client really needs from you, then you've actually got it reversed. 99.9% of the time, your lights are supposed to help you tell a story. They are not the story. Somehow, I had to give my 2 pesewas worth on lighting today.br /br /MUA: Renee Q. Boateng. Model: Claudia. Ok let's start with Bertil. He works for Africa Interactive and had celebrate his birthday in Accra because of Maker Faire. Bertil handles and is in contact with over 700 journalists and reporters across Africa. You can check their main website at www.africanews.com. br /br /Have you heard of the famous Blackboard Blogger of Africa? His name is Alfred Sirleaf. I asked him today if he is in anyway related to the Liberian present and he said yes. Who would have thought writing on a black board could make one a superstar?br /br /Finally, let's meet the Malawian young man who invented his own windmill from scratch in some remote village in Malawi with just 60 inhabitants. He made his first windmill at the age of 14, to power a radio set. William Kamkwamba was a drop out at the time of his invention. I was documenting the lives of three women (mother, daughter, granddaughter) around Korle Bu, Accra when this old man came by. He started flirting with this old but younger woman and I really enjoyed watching them at it. We got into conversation and he tells me he used to be a drummer in quite a number of big bands back in the 60s. br /br /I have a special love in my hearts for old creatives. Especially the ones in Ghana. Most of them live and die as paupers. I remember the story my dad told me about the last days of Bob Cole, the famous lead character in "I told you so". Scary story. I personally saw a bit of Araba Stamp's last days. Sad case too.br /br /I remember a poetry bash at British Council, Accra and George Williams, Ghana's veteran actor recited a poem about a canister that was crushed and discarded after its sweet contents had been gulped down by an ingrate. br /Honestly, I think that is what Africa does to its creatives. The few who survive are the ones who are smart enough to fight the system.br /a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/3820972971/" title="Happy Ol'man by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3285/3820972971_0369c63db8_o.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Happy Ol'man" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-5789242462811270987?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

One of the things I learnt in my copywriting days is how much just a few words can actually say. br /br /The sign in this picture reads Elizabeth and Andy fell in love, probably married and also became business partners. As is common in love and business, they hit the rocks but couldn't recover so they went their separate ways... and one of them opened a new chapter, leaving Liz-Andy behind them. br /br /This is what I read. What do you read?a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/3780647432/" title="Too much information? by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2461/3780647432_db82a969de_o.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Too much information?" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-8627952877051526082?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com' alt='' //div

After seeing too many of these scenes on my way back to Accra from Cape Coast, I couldn't help wondering where the man is? I'm definitely not setting this up for the anti-male feminists among you to rant and rave. I need well-thought-through answers. What makes it so comfortable for the Ghanaian Male to think it is ok to abandon his family or alternatively stay at home but just be an irresponsible liability? a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwize/3756429184/" title="Wood Fetcher by NanaKofiAcquah, on Flickr"img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3756429184_dea25514c2_o.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Wood Fetcher" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-2448341933563818725?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com'//div

Well, Mr. President, even though I cannot get to officially photograph you, I figured I could dedicate an image to you. It is the least I can do. WELCOME TO GHANA a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_k2jbAwmrTuA/SleSpT66TCI/AAAAAAAAAbE/avG_R5TCRNE/s1600-h/acrobat-for-Obama.jpg"img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_k2jbAwmrTuA/SleSpT66TCI/AAAAAAAAAbE/avG_R5TCRNE/s400/acrobat-for-Obama.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356911520200150050" //abr /And before I forget, I want to give you some tidbits on Ghana:br /br /1.) If at table, our president says “You are invited”, He doesn’t necessarily mean it. He’s just being polite. It is common in Ghana to have a friend frown at you for eating their food, even though they gladly invited you.br /br /2.) If you hear someone scream “Ballack Obama”, don’t ignore them. It’s you they are calling. Some Ghanaians consider “L” and “R” to be siblings so they use them interchangeably. I can see a typical Ashanti diplomat looking at you and the first lady and saying “Ballack and Micherre, you are wercome”.br /br /3. I know you are left-handed Mr. President but in Ghana, you never wave with your left hand. Traditionally, we consider the hand you use to clean your $%@*! after using the toilet to be unwholesome for anything else. I remember this petty trader yelling “Master, why your left?!” at me in Cape Coast. I quickly remembered I am in Ghana. The worst thing you can ever do in Ghana, is to eat fufu with your left hand. Everybody will stop eating to look at you. If you don’t trust me, try it.br /br /4. When the chef brings your dinner and you think the sauce or soup is stinky, IT REALLY IS. Koobi or Ewurafua or Momomone is salted fish that is partially left to rot and then dried. If your host serves you Koobi, then they consider you really special. Mr. President, if you are courageous enough to try Koobi, then don’t even bother brushing your teeth or washing your hands. Koobi’s powers cannot be tamed by toothpastes or soap. You must give yourself two to three days to get your fresh breath back.br /br /5. Mr. President, I know you are interested in our oil. That’s ok. If in a meeting you keep hearing the word “WOYIR” , "WOYEL" or “OYER”, they are talking about the same thing - Oil.br /br /6. Finally, if our president in a chat tells you “Our ECOMINI”, he means ECONOMY. He mixes them up sometimes. br /br /Thank you Mr. President and do have a wonderful stay in Ghana.div class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-6087986861919694337?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com'//div

I was born in Ghana, raised in Ghana and I currently live in Ghana. I'm used to seeing people kissing in public but not in Ghana. Recently at the beach, I saw this couple giving it a go. I was surprised. What surprised me even more was the fact that I was surprised. I also noticed nobody really paid attention to them. Are Ghanaians now used to kissing in public? Am I stuck back in time? Funny how they chose to stand by a canoe that says "noko ye dzen" which means" There are strange things in this world". I can hear my grandmother saying that if she ever saw this couple kissing in public. a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_k2jbAwmrTuA/SlMl0B3h_3I/AAAAAAAAAa0/fA1M3bLRMx0/s1600-h/kissers-4web.jpg"img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_k2jbAwmrTuA/SlMl0B3h_3I/AAAAAAAAAa0/fA1M3bLRMx0/s400/kissers-4web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5355665957658427250" //adiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-1746343473833263178?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com'//div

Michael quickly grabbed a couple of shots of me as I photographed them with their cameras. Now... to the main point of this blog:br /br /I have this habit of jumping into projects without paying attention to the fine prints, intent of use etc.br /After all, we are in Ghana. It is “Live and Let Live”. It is “Onipa nua ne nipa”. It is “the left hand baths the right hand and vice versa”. I’m still a sucker for some of these traditional ideologies but there comes a time when a man must do what he knows is the right, professional and ethical thing to do. br /br /I was nicely reminded recently of this ancient truth: “People Change”. It just hurts when they change for the worse. As they say, the easiest way to destroy a fool is to promote them. br /br /I guess all I’m saying is, if I ask you to sign a model release or a terms of contract or a memoranda of understanding or some such document before a project commences, it is not because I don’t trust you; but because it is not what we know that matters, it is what we do.div class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1392769759109690709-5172481975202641240?l=nanakofiacquah.blogspot.com'//div
