In order not to sound like a broken record, I have chosen not to repeat what we all know; "Cleanliness is next to Godliness".br / However, I have come to realize that everything has to do with mentality and attitude. Maintenance of infrastructure and even positions is not part of our culture as Ghanaians. What we are good at doing is making elaborate things to prove that are capable of doing "something". Ask a Ghanaian to make a proposal for a project and you would be marveled by the technological expertise with which the PowerPoint Presentation would be made and how eloquently the presentation would be given. Yet, ask for the work to be done and that is another story for another century. This attitude has led to the collapse of many industries and the deterioration of a huge percentage of the country's infrustracture. This attitude is also carried to policies that affect education, healthcare and the basic necessities that affect the layman. /span/divdiv align="justify"span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;color:#000000;" Maintenance just like cleanliness is an attitude that has be inculcated. It starts with developing little habits; picking up after yourself, keeping things in some form of order and not waiting for total disarray before fixing. It starts with yourself (yes maintain your body), to your room, your house, your neighborhood...br / Cleanliness is next to godliness but maintenance is what sustains cleanliness! /span/divdiv align="justify"span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;color:#000000;"/span/divspan style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"span style="color:#000000;"div align="justify"br /Link for "keep of grass": /spana href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/7853656.stm"span style="color:#000000;"news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/7853656.stm/span/a/span/divdiv align="justify"span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;color:#000000;"/span/divemspan style="font-family:times new roman;"span style="color:#000000;"span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"div align="justify"br /Disclaimer: There are a lot of generalizations in this article, it is not meant to loop everyone into these generalizations/span./span/span/em/divdiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2514653573750022136-6700353776734400566?l=ignoramus101.blogspot.com'//div

My scream of confusion at this headline nearly caused my poor father to tumble off the couch as he tried to catch his usual morning beauty sleep. /span/divspan style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"div align="justify"br /In an effort to understand why such a tabooed amount of tax-payers' money could be spent in 24 hours given the current state of the Ghanaian “ecomini”, I looked for answers in the article. But as usual, there were none. All that was contained under said headline was a reiteration on the amount of money that the current government had spent on the Obama trip. Poor journalism does not permit much ease in finding relevant information in Ghana; yet despite this lack of credible sources and data to support this accusation against the government, I was left wondering… “How much was spent on the 24-hour visit by President Obama?”br //divdiv align="justify"br /If this claim is true and the government indeed spent that humongous “ega” (Ewe for money) for this historical trip, then I am hugely disappointed. Much worse, we are even more elated to dish out huge sums of money as though we walk on golden streets in Ghana. Apparently (and this is hear say), President Obama and his entourage ate kenkey at the castle. Ei! Ho! I didn’t know kenkey costs “opipipiiipi”. /spanbr /a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_aDmB_Q6LHKk/SnqhpMkaw_I/AAAAAAAAAHc/fXv0mB-fFec/s1600-h/kenkey_fish.jpg"/a/divdiv align="justify"span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_aDmB_Q6LHKk/SnqhpMkaw_I/AAAAAAAAAHc/fXv0mB-fFec/s1600-h/kenkey_fish.jpg"/abr /The NDC government vehemently attacked the NPP government for spending ¢50m on the Ghana@50 celebrations. I believe the good book says, “Remove the LOG from your eye before you remove the SPLINTER from another person’s eye.” I do not condone nor support any of the unwise decisions being made at the expense of Ghanaian citizens. In fact I am tired of the two key political parties who spend time bickering as though they were children instead of focusing on the pressing issues “lay” Ghanaians are facing. Ghana does not belong to those political parties for them to dish out expensive “birthday gifts” to people who are not even celebrating their birthdays. /spanbr //divdiv align="justify"span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"br /I’m going to drink my morning tea and say a word of prayer for the Almighty to change the hearts of our leaders lest my fury boil and burn down my computer as I type. /spanbr //divspan style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"span style="font-size:85%;"div align="justify"br /Link for Obama picture : /spana href="http://news.myjoyonline.com/news/200907/33364.asp"span style="font-size:85%;"http://news.myjoyonline.com/news/200907/33364.asp/span/aspan style="font-size:85%;" /spanspan style="font-size:85%;"br /Link for kenkey picture: /spana href="http://www.adonaba.com/bilder/kenkey_fish.JPG"span style="font-size:85%;"http://www.adonaba.com/bilder/kenkey_fish.JPG/span/a/span/divspan style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"br /ememspan style="font-size:85%;"Disclaimer: This post was written last week but not posted./span/em/em/spandiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2514653573750022136-9015365962458470118?l=ignoramus101.blogspot.com'//div

UNEXPECTED
div align="justify"span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"br /So, I decided that instead on sitting down and wallowing in my current situation of curfews and lack of independence, I will invest time in my graduate school applications and keep up with my blogs. I wrote a note about 25 and more random things about me on facebook and I deleted it ( I am fond of deleting things; something I must stop doing). Therefore, I'm bringing it back!!! Enjoybr /br /1) My full name would have been Abena Opokua Bampo Opoku Darko Mensah (had my grandfather not decided to drop Mensah from his name and my father, including his siblings dropped Darko from their names)br /br /2) Since I entered into a "personal relationship" with God in January 2009, Christianity has taken on a new meaning for me. I used to profess to be a Christian because that is how I was raised but never really understood what being a Christian was. Jesus is the center of my world; he is my all in all and everything else revolves around him. Life is so different and clearer now.br /br /3) I love shoes. I'm sorry I can't help it. I don't know if it because I am short or what. But my need to acquire shoes is pathetic. The sad thing though is that I acquire the shoes and give them away. If not by now I would have had ~100 shoes. :-( The shoes I also get are very cheap so it doesn't help my situation. At the moment I think I am at ~30.br /br /4) My father is the number one human being in my life. I see him as both my mother and father cos he is the one who raised me (with help from my granny). I call him to wish him happy mothers day. It's so difficult for me to disobey him; it's like hurting myself. We have our ups and downs and he still treats me like a lil girl (which i totally despise) but I love him mucho grande. If you see us communicating you won't think he is my father; you would think he is my sugar daddy or boyfriend ;-)br /br /5) I LOVE to cook. I learnt my cooking skills from my father but I am not as good as him. I don't even know why he doesn't open a restaurant so we can stop this hustling life that we are living. kai! The sad thing though is I don't know how to bake so I am learning that now. But I will cook anyday and anytime.br /br /6) It's sad but I see myself as the person who will get a pHD and sit at home and take care of her husband and kids. I like taking care of people and making them happy. I once told my friend that the investment banking world was not meant for me. I need a 9am-5pm job so I can go home and take care of my husband and kids. Told her I didn't want my husband cheating cos of lack of attention.br /br /7) With respects to a husband. He will be very happy and very well taken care of. He shall not lack in anything; he'll get all the good stuff ;-)br /br /8) I'm scared of my husband cheating on me though. He can do anything cheating and lying dei.. debi debi debi. That is a no no no!br /br /9) I hate lies. I loath them in fact. I try my best with God's help not to lie. As much as the truth hurts I would rather hear them than the filthy lies and *deletions* that people fail to mention.br /br /10) No matter how much you hurt me, I will never hate you. If you need help, I'll give you help whole heartedly but know that if you take advantage of this, you have Jesus to answer to.br /br /11) I was (is) a tom boy; climbed trees, played all those games (Street fighter, 007, dead or alive, killer instinct, mortal combat, dead or alive, sonic the hedgehog). You can't blame me, of all the grandchildren that grew up in my grandmother's house, I was the only girl.br /br /12) I never owned a barbie. All I got were legos and educational things. The closest I got a barbie was when I was sewing clothes for my cousin's barbie (at age 6)br /br /13) I wanted to go to fashion school instead of college but my Ghanaian dad would not even hear it. I still want to go and will go but that is after I get him his bachelor's and masters degree. Left up to him a pHD as well but i'm not sure about that. I want to go to culinary school as wellbr /br /14) Some people are shocked when I tell them I am biochemistry major. Haha. well, I was brained washed since I was a kid to go into the sciences. I know of nothing else.br /br /15) I want to be a food scientist and open up my own food processing company in Ghana which caters to the layman's needs unlike the elitist food processing companies we currently have.br /br /16) Thus I want to obtain both masters and pHD degrees in food science. Food science IS NOT culinary science nor is it nutrition. Food Science is the application of physics, maths, engineering, biochemistry, biology or chemistry to covert raw products into processed foods and also maintain these products. ITS A HARD CORE SCIENCE!br /br /17) I tend to sing and dance a lot when I am happy although I am not an expert at any of them.br /br /18) I LOVE Ghana. With all our problems, I love the place. I don't know what the fascination with the USA is but I am ITCHING to leave this place. I can't stand it. I want to be home and eat my evening dose of soft kenkey with star kist in kpakpo shitc, sardine, fried fish, octopus, omelete, red pepper, green pepper, cornbeef and shito. Now that's a meal. not the calamarized onions they serve us for lunch!br /br /19) I always wish I knew how to speak Ewe (my mother is ewe). I will forever blame my mother for this disability.br /br /20) People say I am vertically challenged. I am ~5.1' but I always say that I make up for my lack of height in other obvious places ;-)br /br /21) I hate fights and drama. Please I beg, don't bring me drama. I will give in and say I am sorry just to avoid fights and drama.br /br /22) I love my brothers (David-my biological brother and Kobby-my overprotective cousin) so much. No matter how much they annoy me they know that I always got their backbr /br /23) If you're my friend; not acquintance, not fake friend, then you have no worries. I will be loyal to you and I always got your back Even the fake friends, acquintance and frenemies have no problems.. I still got their backs as well.br /br /24) I hated high school. It was my worse four years (except for my loviaiting times with boo of 3 years)br /br /25) I don't regret any of my previous relationships. Yeah I used to be bitter about the bad experiences that I had but now I see them as learning tools and I know that they most definitely made me a better person so to all of my exes, I say thank you!br /br /26) I can sew, cook, clean. I am a housewife in the flesh. Yeah yeah I go to an all women's college where there are many miss independents and I am one but I get a lot of joy from doing these traditional things. It has nothing to do with males!br /br /27) I have come to realize that life is too short to stress over the many problems life throws at us, so I am leaving all my problems to God. He takes care of them one by one.br /br /28) I have been told so many times that I am emotional and sensitive. Well, we all grow up with different experiences that shape us to be who we are. I am trying to not let things get to me but I would rather be sensitive than insensitivebr /br /29) I would like to get married by 25. My father will slap the bejesus out of me when he hears this nonsense but that is what i want. He wants me to get my pHD, work for a year before I even think about getting married. I wll be 28 by then. Let see what God wants for me. I hope it's not the same thing Daddy wants...br /br /30) I care a ton about people and this can come off as being motherly or bossy sometimes. Trying to watch that. Don't want to give people the wrong vibesbr /br /31) I laugh a lot. A bit too much infact!br /br /32) I realised last year that I am lactose intolerant so please for your own sake and mine don't offer me any icecream or milky chocolate. I beg you paabr /br /33) I love spicy food but my stomach has decided that I have eaten enough spicy food to last me a lifetime so it has started rebelling. I need to go back to Ghana so that the bacteria in the stomach can start behaving again. Kai!br /br /34) I am so scared of heights. I sleep before the plane takes off and before it lands. Anything that causes my foot to move from asase yaa (the earth) is height to me including floating on my back in a pool. It took me a whole semester to learn how to float without someone holding my backbr /br /35) I am claustrophobic!br /br /36) I miss my grandmother Beatrice Davi-Ami Dovi-Dotse a lot. She is the main reason I want to go back to Ghana in addition to other alterior motives ;-)br /br /37) And yes I am 1/4 ewe. My love for eating banku and okro on any daily basis did not magically happen.br /br /38) I am 1/2 akwapim, 1/4 fante and1/4 ewe. I have never been to Keta nor do I know how to speak ewe except for "tso", "devio", "efornh arhh", fiafitc"; things I picked up from my grandmother. Been to akropong so many times, it is the only hometown I know. /span/divdiv align="justify"span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;" /div/spandiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2514653573750022136-8535869794458502234?l=ignoramus101.blogspot.com'//div

UNEXPECTED
div align="justify"span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"br /Yes! The title says it all... I am turning 22 in 4 months and I am single. Several of my male friends are fascinated by this phenomenom when they find out. Others think I am playing a late April fool's day joke on them. I have even been asked if the men around me are blind; something that always cause me to blush, black as I am. br /br /Some months ago, in a state of depression, I wondered what it was that I did wrong, that made my ex-es move on in less than a month after we had broken up unconventionally. After spending months beating myself down, I realised that doing that was not going to change my situation nor was it going to help me move on. With God's help and the love and support of my friends, I picked myself up, dusted myself off and moved onbr /br /I don't see any of my previous experiences as mistakes. Rather I see them as learning experiences that have made me a better person. So what if "he has moved on" or "she has moved on" and you still "like"/"love" them. Life goes on. There are many fishes in the sea and if you wait patiently, you'll catch a big one! After all one man's meat is another man's poison or better yet the lion's left overs is the main meal of the vulture ( as graphic as it is, it conveys what I want to say). Yes, I have been scarred and my heart shattered in pieces but "what does not kill you only makes you stronger". br /br /A wise man said "If you're using the same method and it constantly gives you the same result, CHANGE THE METHOD". So, I am changing my method. I am human and I am attracted to men ( I am beginning to doubt that these days :-( ) but right now is the time for me to do me. My priority is God, my family, friends and to get into grad school for my p.h.D. If along the way God works a miracle and someone comes into my life, praise be. I will dedicate an "AsEmpa hymn" at church but if not, life goes onbr /br /So for now, I am turning 22, single and I am loving every bit of it!/span/divdiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2514653573750022136-1697619144678426037?l=ignoramus101.blogspot.com'//div

UNEXPECTED
div align="justify"span style="font-size:+0;"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"br /I don't know what has necessarily changed about me but I am being noticed; being told I look good and being told I am sexy. The only thing that has changed about me physically is the fact that I have shed a few pounds off of my "banku" loving body. My attitude and demeanor has also changed but you only realize that when you interact with me. This phenomena of my sudden "notice", which I deem to be strange, got me thinking about the attitude of being physically appealing, a.k.a being sexy and being slim, in our physical appearance-oriented society. br /br /I keep wondering what differentiates a voluptuous, God-endowed woman and a slim yet curvacious woman when it comes to being sexy. Really it all boils down to the aura and swagger the woman exudes. In a society where being slim is the ideal, a woman who finds herself on the other end of the spectrum will no doubt have questions when it comes to her confidence in herself. On the other hand, the ideal epitomic woman will explode with confidence. Most of the ideals that women have to conform/adapt to are pushed unto them by the media who serve as the voices of men in our patriachial society. Increasingly we find women going under the knives or buying products which claim to produce the ideal of being slim in order to be accepted. More and more women are taking gym classes not to be healthy but to lose weight. br /br /I once found myself the victim of this craze and embarked on a journey to lose weight, which I did. Now that I have gotten there, I don't want to stop because I like all the attention it is giving me and the new found confidence I am gaining as well. And I would be lying if I say that I have not been tempted to buy the many slimming drugs that have invaded our tv and radio spaces. If I feel this way at 21, how much more the many younger ladies who have been called "obolo" a.k.a fat by their family members, friends and their society? br /br /I have been there and I know both the emotional and psychological effects those words can have on the self esteem of a growing woman. It is even made worse when the society is consumed with an ideal of beauty that is superficial. True beauty comes from within. It is high time we stopped robbing our future women leaders of what could propel them to be great; their self esteem. Let's not encourage our children to exercise or eat healthy in order to lose weight but rather to stay fit. I fell victim to this propaganda of false beauty and it lead me down a lane I wish for no one even my worst enemy. br /br /To all the ladies out there, you are beautiful and so are your love handles, hips, thighs, butt and other well endowed part of your fearfully and wonderfully made body./span/span/span/divdiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2514653573750022136-4382321809420616548?l=ignoramus101.blogspot.com'//div

UNEXPECTED
div style="text-align: justify"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: #39;trebuchet ms#39;"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small"br /With Valentine’s day looming around the corner, single, coupled and multi-combined people are all excited about the prospects that Valentine's day would bring. Some mailboxes will overflow with red roses, chocolates and other gifts that indicate the magnitude of the love being expressed. Some mailboxes on the other hand will be spotless with no hope of experiencing what other mailboxes are experiencing. I strongly believe that although Valentine’s day is the worldwide day to express your love for other people regardless of its form, showing love should not be secluded to just one day in the year. div style="text-align: justify;"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"br /I can't remember how many times I have made new year resolutions and have broken them. Each year, I have long lists of what not to do and start the year with a strong dedication to follow them. And just as the years before, I follow them for just a few days and break each of them. Not a year has passed by when I have religiously followed any of the resolutions. I have been trying to find reasons as to why this happens. For me, I strongly believe that my problem is the fact that although I make these promises, I find myself with no one to hold me accountable to them. So this year, I am deciding to do things differently, I am going to make a few people my accountability partners. People who would ensure that I am following through with at least one thing on the list. And so for the first time I am going to publicly share my New Year Resolutions.br //span/span/divspan class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"br //span/spandiv style="text-align: center;"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"1) Put God first in everything that I dobr /2) Go to the gym 3 times a week for 1 hourbr /3) Stop stressing over trivial issues and learn to have funbr /4) Stay away from intimate relationships this yearbr /5) Stop fighting with my parents by doing what I can to avoid such situationsbr //span/span/divspan class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"br //span/spanspan class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;" /span/span/spanspan class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"This is what I have for this year./span/spandiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2514653573750022136-9188343785260748196?l=ignoramus101.blogspot.com'//div

div align="justify"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"br /I am in utter disbelief at the outcome of the run off elections in Ghana. During the wait for the results from the Tain consituency, tensions have running high, insultshave been exchanged between the two main political parties and most importantly Ghanaians are being impatient. It is without doubt that for the mercies of the Almighty God, what had happened in Kenya or Zimbabwe would have happened in Ghana today. I don't know what to say, really! I mean we've all heard what has to be said about remaining calm and waiting for the Electoral Commission to do its job. We've heard people say "Above our political party affiliations, we're Ghanaians". Both the President and ex-President have called for Ghanaians to remain calm. /span/span/divdiv align="justify"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';font-size:100%;"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"br //span/span/divdiv align="justify"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"While we wait patiently for Tain to re-vote and to finally put this issue of who is going to be the next president of Ghana to rest, it is my hope that "common sense" and patriotism for Ghana will prevail. I know for certain that should NPP win, there will be trouble. Should the NDC win, "wahala" will come. I hope amongst this confusion a true leader emerges; someone who has the best interest of Ghana at heart. This leader should graciously conceed and allow the fragile democracy that we enjoy to grow./span/span/divdiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2514653573750022136-4435901119445861575?l=ignoramus101.blogspot.com'//div

We have moved to a new era where the president can be called a “fool” without any harm befalling the individual who made such a comment. Despite its constant abuse, I am grateful daily for this freedom. However, without proper care for this young and fragile liberty, it will be snatched from us while we are not looking. We don’t have to look far to see this. Take for instance our sister nation Nigeria, disputes over local elections resulted in the deaths of over 200 people./span/span/span/p p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align: justify;line-height:normal"span times="" new=""span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"Churches, mosques and shrines are filling up as the Election Day draws near and prayers for peace are echoing from these sanctuaries. According to Watson “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours -- whereas all the testing says not really”, referring to Africans. As an African, I smiled as I read this statement not because I agreed with him but because I found it extremely amusing and ignorant. /span/span/divdiv align="justify"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"br //span/span/div div align="justify"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"Coming from Ghana (a country) in Africa (the 2nd largest continent), racism was a concept I heard of watching CNN or listening to BBC back home. To me it was a figment of my imagination and it never existed. That was then, when I was back home where I was the majority. However, coming to America has taught me other wise. The question that permeates my every thought on this issue of racism is "why racism?". Why should I be treated differently from others or be called a monkey just because God in his own wisdom decided to give me more melanin than others in order to protect my skin from the harsh rays of the tropical sun. What sin did I commit, that this augmented amount of melanin in my skin should be a basis for others to think that I am not capable of superior intelligence? br /br //span/spanspan class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;" /span/span/div div align="justify"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"For someone with such scholarly recognition, I would expect him to have know more but after my twenty years on this God given earth, I have come to realize that being book smart does not reflect intelligence and that intelligence transcends being able to reproduce what you learn in class.
